A parent was recently fined for sending their child to school without any grains in their lunch.
According to the school policy, every student needed a “healthy” lunch that includes a meat, milk, grain, fruit, and vegetable product. Because the student did not have any grains, the school gave her some Ritz Crackers in order to make her meal more “nutritionally balanced”.
The school then fined the parents and suggested that she include Ritz Crackers in her lunch.
Conclusions
This is one of the most absurd misapplications of pseudoscientific dietary dogma I have seen in a long time. Research is pretty clear that grains are not a healthy food choice, and for school officials to think that they were improving a child’s lunch by adding Ritz Crackers just shows how easy it is for people in positions of authority to implement policies about topics that they know absolutely nothing about.
