Researchers provided mice with PQQ supplements, a compound which has previously been found to prevent deterioration of cellular mitochondria.
Compared to the placebo group, the mice receiving the PQQ supplements demonstrated markedly reduced degenerative changes to the discs of their spine over the course of their lifespan.
Conclusions
Negative spine changes as a result of aging may be attributed to damage to the mitochondria of the disc periphery, and interventions such as PQQ that promote enhanced mitochondrial function may reduce weakening of the spine related to aging.
