Upper Trap Tension Linked to Increased Risk for Migraines

Researchers assessed the size and stiffness of neck muscles in fibromyalgia patients with chronic migraines.

Compared to the control group, migraine patients displayed increased tightness in the upper traps and decreased size of the deep neck flexor muscles.

Conclusions

Weakness of the deep neck flexors and other muscles nearby the neck can cause overactivity of the upper traps, increasing risk for headaches and migraine. Individuals who suffer from migraines should undergo a neck evaluation from a skilled Doctor of Physical Therapy.
