Watermelon Reduces Muscle Soreness

A new study has found that watermelon may be effective at reducing muscle soreness.

The study had subjects perform vigorous exercise on a cycle ergometer and consume one of two drinks.  Half of the subjects received watermelon juice, while the other half received a placebo.  Over the next 24 hours, those who consumed the watermelon juice endured significantly less muscle soreness and and reduced recovery heart rate.

The researchers believe this is likely due to the fact that watermelon is one of the highest sources of a compound called L-Citrulline, which is commonly found in workout supplements.  The researchers found, however, that the L-Citrulline had greater bioavailability when it was consumed in the form of watermelon than when consumed alone in supplement form.  Thus, it is reasonable to believe that consuming real watermelon would be more beneficial than purchasing workout supplements with L-Citrulline.

Conclusions

Many people resort to anti-inflammatory drugs to help curb the soreness that can result from exercise.   These drugs may come with unwanted side effects, however, and natural remedies such as watermelon may potentially be a superior alternative for some individuals.
